Value-added Programs

Nutritional experts at PM Beef encourage producer partners to include selenium yeast  and vitamin E in their cattle rations. Selenium and vitamin E improve the health of the beef animal, as well as help maintain the fresh-looking, cherry-red color of the meat and extend the shelf life of beef in the meat case.  Selenium yeast in the ration enhances the animal's utilization of vitamin E.

Selenium improves the health of cattle as well as the health of consumers who eat beef.  Research has shown that selenium improves immune response and disease resistance, improving the overall health and well-being of the beef animal.

Worldwide studies have shown that selenium deficiency in the human diet can impact cognition, fertility, aging, immune response, disease susceptibility and a number of other conditions. Eating beef from animals fed rations supplemented with selenium can help humans meet their daily selenium requirements.

Feeding selenium and vitamin E

We support our producer partners by helping them develop rations that are beneficial to their cattle and to the beef that they provide to our customers. We recognize the value and benefits of including selenium yeast and vitamin E in the ration and reward producers who participate in our program.

To participate in the PM Beef value-added mineral program, producers must include the required level — 0.02 lb/head/day — of the PM Beef Enrichment Pak in the animal's diet.  The Enrichment Pak is a trace mineral pack containing vitamin E and selenium yeast that the producer's local feed manufacturer adds to the ration.  We have contracted with Alltech to produce the Enrichment Pak to specifications that meet the PM Beef value-added mineral program.

Our cattle procurement department can answer questions producer partners or their feed suppliers might have about purchasing the Enrichment Pak, the cost of the pack and the premiums received when cattle are marketed. It is important to remember to enroll in the added mineral program so we can track and verify your cattle to the retail or export customers and reward you accordingly.
